India is the ideal all-season destination. Days are bright and sunny in the winter (November to February) throughout India. Beach holidays, tours through Delhi, Rajasthan, Central and South India are ideal during this time. North India (in and around Delhi) has a temperature range of 4 – 25 degrees from November to February, while the South is slighlty warmer with temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees.
Most of India is hot during the summer months (April to June) so this is often the best time to retreat to the mountains. The Himalayas offer lush meadows, cool retreats and adventure sports during this time in addition to its world famous awe-inspiring beauty. March to June are also the best times to view wildlife, as the waterholes normally run dry in these months before the monsoon, and the animals come out in search of water.
Then arrive the monsoon rains, providing respite for the summer heat. Some time in June, the clouds break along the Southern coast and are pushed northwards by July, bringing rain from the South West monsoon to the entire Indian sub-continent. Most of India receives its major share of rain between June and September, except for the South-East, which receives its rainfall from the North-Easterly monsoon between October and December. June to September is actually the best time for Ayurveda treatments as the skin is especially receptive to the Ayurvedic oils. The South West can also experience a few showers in October/November from the retreating monsoon. The areas that remain dry during this time are Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir, the highest desert in the world, and neighbouring areas of Himachal Pradesh.
